Flew Sneakypeaks
Flew SneakyPeaks has had his head down writing material for an upcoming album which will be more musical and less DJ orientated.
Flew Sneakypeaks aka Gavin Flewitt’s love for music started from a very young age, his first memory is being able to put records on his mums turntable at the age of about 2 or 3 and recalls feeling uber cool as he stuck on disco track after disco track and boogieing in his purple vest and matching Y fronts!
Gav lived with his Mum, older brother and sister and it was the music tastes from them that sculpted his music knowledge from a young age. At around the age of 11 he was heavily influenced by his older brother who got him into break dancing with his neighbours. By this time Gav felt he had found a taste in music he loved and was listening to likes of Juan Atkins, Afrika Bombatta and many more running around with his Nike Windbreaker and Pony NFL shoes. It wasn’t long before he was introduced to Hip Hop and Gangster Rap buying the albums of Public Enemy, NWA and Tim Dog and recalls himself and a mate going into a local park with his Ghetto Blaster blaring out music by the controversial US act 2-live Crew.
During his teens Gav turned to more aggressive music and went through a phase of Nirvana, Machine Head and Rage Against the Machine to name a few. While still loving electro based music he was introduced to Hardcore and was about the time that the London Rave scene and Drum and Bass was exploding in the UK. Ignoring the music of his peers he had now found an ideal music as it had aggression in the breaks, groovey bass and electro fx. He was hooked!
Gav saved up and brought his first record decks one was a consumer Technics deck with a little wheel for pitch and the other was a Garrad with hardly any pitch control at all but that was enough. Most of his friends at the time had a pair of 1210s but ironically were absolute no hopers with that elusive beat match mixing of which he nailed instantly. Gav recalls a very good friend of his saying he was going through a fad and remembers telling him to F**k Off and that he would be Djing In big clubs very soon!
The following year he began promoting his own club nights in East Anglia and it was at one of these nights it all started to take shape.
Gav was spinning some Renegade Hardware tunes in a club and was later approached by a promoter who loved what he heard asking him if he wanted to go on tour. After a few discussions Gav was sent on his first ever European tour of 5 dates around Switzerland and was with UK Drum and Bass giants Digital, Spirit, Klute and DJ Freedom. These were the best days of his life DJIng and partying every night, Gav also played at Clactons premiere nightspot Oscar’s in Essex.
People who have successful careers sometimes fall into trouble and this was about to happen for Gav. The life-style had led to him dabbling with recreational drugs and scatty women and was all about go horribly wrong. Some point after all of this he found himself in a crazy part of his life and ended up in jail. This was time to reflect and whilst being locked up and sober he decided that music was and had always been his passion. He decided to go clean and on leaving jail he went about setting up a small studio so he could start to write music himself.
Luckily for him computers had made making music much more accessible and meant that you didn’t necessarily need a huge mixing desk or rack mounted gear that he originally thought. Gav initially set up with Ableton Live and after using Credit Cards and Loans to get his complete setup he now runs with Protools LE and various outboard gear.
